a day for the jam jar🫙🥹

In Germany, we have this lovely little expression: Marmeladenglas-Momente, which translates to “jam jar moments”

The idea is that you collect those little moments that are too beautiful, funny or special to forget and put them in an imaginary jam jar to keep for later ☺️

And this day with @bignature.adventures definitely gave me a few that deserve a spot in my jar. From all the views, experiencing the unreal landscape, the stories our Guide told us about the place, allll the little details, conversations, the pikas, and simply being out there with a bunch of wonderful people gave me a loooot of jam to fill my jar 🥰

Definitely one of those days I’ll want to open the jar for again someday 🫙😍

okay, chill. Nobody actually has to die 😂 but that’s what people say…

This little cabin belongs to a historic lodge with a very small number of rooms and cabins, tucked away in the Lake O’Hara basin in Yoho NP. The main lodge was built in 1926 (which is beauuutiful), and because there are so few spots compared with the number of people who want to stay here, getting a reservation is almost impossible, and that’s why people say someone has to pass away first 😅

Reservations apparently have to be made directly with the lodge by phone, and there’s a minimum three night stay (which not too many people can afford). Also, the lodge gives booking priority to long term, repeat clientele, and their season is super short, as they are only open from mid June to early October. All this combined makes it super hard to book this place…

BUT (!) good news: there are other options (which can be just as hard to get):

1. snag a campsite (hard but possible)🏕️
2. stay at the Elizabeth Parker Hut with the @alpineclubcan
3. Be lucky and get a @parks.canada shuttle spot to visit for the day 🚌
4. Hike the 11 km road in and out for a loooong day
5. Go with a @bignature.adventures tour like I did, which also gives you plenty of information and great company 🥰 (you can add your name on the waitlist for 2027 already)

Lake O’Hara is definitely one of those places where the combination of limited access + tiny amount of accommodation + unreal scenery really preserves that charm and I can see why people wanna come back to this place after they’ve seen it once. 🥰

but especially Pikas, because how could you NOT love these tiny little potatoes?! 😍

If you’re new here: I’m a little obsessed with Pikas, and the more I watch and learn about them, the more I love them. Here are a few things you might not know about these little guys:

🐰 they’re not rodents. Pikas are actually lagomorphs, so they’re related to rabbits and hares.

⛰️ they live in some pretty extreme places. In the Canadian Rockies, you can find them high in the alpine, where temperatures, snow and weather can get pretty brutal (there are different species living in different rocky habitats across North America and Asia).

🌼 they don’t hibernate. Instead, they spend their summers collecting and drying plants to build massive haypiles that will feed them throughout the winter (kinda meal prep all summer long).

😱 they’ll even steal from their neighbours when they’re not looking, which makes them some of the cutest little thieves out there

❄️ they are veeeery good at surviving winter. they have a thick coat of fur and stay tucked between rocks and under the snow while the world around them freezes (the snowpack also helps insulate them from extreme winter temperatures)

👂🏻 you’ll probably hear them before you see them. They are pretty loud for their size and their “eeep” is often a warning call when they spot a predator. So if you hear them, they’re probably announcing that someone suspicious has entered the neighbourhood 👀

🌡️ warming temperatures are a problem. Pikas love the cold and are particularly sensitive to heat and climate change can reduce suitable habitat, alter snowpack and make some populations more isolated. American Pikas can experience dangerous heat stress at temperatures around 25C and above, especially with prolonged exposure 💔

There are so many more cool facts about pikas, but this has to be enough for now. I will continue stopping mid hike whenever I hear an eep or see one flying over the rocks.
and if you don’t like them… I’m not sure if we’d get along 😅👀

I’ve seen this mountain in soo many photos but standing in front of it made me realize how little I actually knew about the mountain itself and the history of the park 👀

So after our trip (which I’m still processing 😅), I went down a little Assiniboine rabbit hole and started digging into its history and stories 🤓

There is so much more to this place than I could ever fit into one carousel, but I hope this can be a little introduction ☺️

I always find that learning more about a place makes me appreciate it even more, and Mount Assiniboine is full of stories, from geology and glaciers to the people who have known this landscape for much longer than we have.

I hope you enjoy these little facts about this beautiful mountain, which felt really unreal to see with my own eyes (the closest I had been before was from the ski lift at @sunshinevillage 😂)

Sources: most of the information in this carousel comes from BC Parks and Parks Canada. One thing you might notice when researching Mount Assiniboine is that some sources call it the 6th highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, while the current BC Parks website calls it the 7th highest.

I know there’s a weird beauty to this, but the reality tells a sad story 💔

We went to the mountains hoping to breathe some fresh, crisp alpine air last weekend, but instead, we found this thick layer of smoke, which has been hanging deep in the valleys for days. That’s kind of haze that makes everything feel a little quieter and heavier.

And it made me realize how much we take those clear mountain days for granted 🏔️

But when the skies turn hazy, it’s not just a change in scenery. It changes the mood and the atmosphere of a landscape, and if you can read between the lines, you know that somewhere, near or far, people have to fight the fires where the smoke comes from. They are leaving their homes, protecting what they can, doing everything to keep their communities and the places they love safe.

While some people might complain about the smoke ruining the mountain plans or the vacation, someone else might be watching their home, their community or their favourite landscape being threatened by it.

So this is my reminder, to appreciate the days when the air is crisp and the mountains are clear. and to be grateful for something that can feel so ordinary until suddenly it isn’t.

P.S. I know some people will say wildfires are “normal” and that Canada has been dealing with them for decades. For me, they are absolutely not nirnal and I don’t know if I will ever get used to this and I also don’t think “normal” should make us numb to what they mean for the people and communities affected by them. 💔

Hands up if you ever thought about bailing before a trip? 🙋🏼‍♀️

A few months ago, a girl I barely knew asked me if I wanted to go backcountry camping with her this summer, and I said yes.

And then our first trip together actually came around and suddenly I was like… should I bail? 👀

And I know this feeling all too well. Whenever I commit to something that pushes me out of my comfort zone, especially with people I don’t know, there’s often a point where my brain starts questioning everything: what if we don’t get along? What if she doesn’t like me? what if it’s awkward? what if the weather is terrible? Maybe I should just come up with an excuse?

This feeling stayed with me right up until the second I picked @nature.is.neato up. 😅
And then… it was completely fine 🥹

We had so many great conversations, laughed a lot, and at some point we even admitted to each other that we had BOTH been thinking about bailing. 😂
Because, commiting to a roadtrip and going into the backcountry with someone you barely know is a pretty big step out of your comfort zone, at least for me.

But I’m so glad neither of us bailed 🙏🏻
It ended up being such a beautiful trip and a really good reminder for me that feeling uncomfortable doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Sometimes it’s just the feeling of doing something new and it’s worth showing up anyway 💛

20 photos are nowhere near enough to capture all the beautiful little moments July brought 🥹

I started the month in Drumheller, where @hasie90 was racing his bike, then spontaneously packed up for a little Waterton adventure with @localintherockies (so glad I said yes!)

Saw so many Pikas, went on my first backcountry camping trip of the season with @nature.is.neato , spent lot of time in the mountains around Kananaskis, hiked with new friends and went on hikes with people I hadn’t seen in way too long, chasing reflections, soaking up summer, and trying to take in as much of these wonderful little mountains as possible.

And just a reminder: this is a highlight post. I also had my lows, was dealing with anxiety, spent too much time behind a screen working, struggling with what I wanna do with my life and all the little ups and downs. Just wanted to mention that because it can look very shiny shiny here, but there’s always so much more happening behind the scenes 🙏🏻

Anyway, I’m feeling very, very grateful for all the places, people, adventures and little moments that made July 26 unforgettable 💛

August adventures are in full swing already but I‘m excited what the rest of the month is gonna look like 🥰

I’ve been sitting on this thought for a while because I didn’t want it to come across the wrong way.
This isn’t about hating trends, but it somehow is.

I know trends can spread important messages, raise awareness for important topics, and even create positive change, which is one of the beautiful things of social media trends. But lately, I’ve been wondering if we’ve started confusing inspiration with imitation? 🥺

When I open this app and scroll for a couple of seconds, I will see the same post a couple of times, just with different footage. I’ve also had a few cases where I’ve seen my own content show up on another account. word. for. word?! The same wording, the same styling, even the same colours. And every time, my first thought is...
WHY? 😅

and dont get me wrong, it’s not about that I want to “own” an idea or so. I lreally ove inspiring people. If something I create encourages someone to tell a story, helps them learn something or look at the world a little differently, that’s one of the biggest compliments I could receive. 🙏🏻

But inspiration and copy & paste aren’t the same thing.
We’re called creators for a reason, and the internet doesn’t need another version of someone else’s post. It needs our unique perspective, our own words and the way we see the world. 💛

Yes, creating from scratch takes more time, it’s harder than following a trend, and maybe it won’t always perform as well. But it’s also the one thing nobody else can recreate. 🤓

So if a trend inspires you, I think that’s wonderful. Take the idea, make it your own, add your own perspective. and if someone else’s work sparked your post, give them credit. It doesn’t take anything away from you, it just shows respect for the creativity that inspired you.

For everyone who’s new here: I’m a little obsessed with these tiny furry creatures that live high up in the alpine, hiding among the rocks.

what they do all day in summer:
🐭 snack.
🌼 collect more snacks for their haystack (their winter food stash)
🤭 steal from the neighbors to make their own haypile even bigger

Unlike many other alpine mammals, they don’t hibernate. Instead, they spend the winter under a thick blanket of snow, living off the plants they collected all summer.

Who else would love to take one home? 🥹

I’ve never heard anyone call the Matterhorn ‘the Assiniboine of Switzerland’ 😅

Before I got to experience this unreal place, I’d always heard it called the Matterhorn of Canada, and something about that never sat right with me. Now I know why: it simply doesn’t do this place justice 🥹

I get why people say it, because their shapes are undeniably similar, but Mount Assiniboine is so much more than Canada’s version of another mountain.

With 3,618m, it’s one of the highest peaks in the southern Canadian Rockies and the centerpiece of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, and the fact that it’s so remote and access so limited (you can only reach it by hiking looong distances or helicopter) is a huge part of what makes it feel so magical ✨

The mountain was named by Canadian geologist George Mercer Dawson in 1885. He named it after the Assiniboine (Nakoda) people, and the name “Assiniboine” comes from a Cree word that’s generally understood to mean “those who cook with stones,” referring to a traditional cooking method using heated rocks. According to the story, when Dawson first saw the mountain, a plume of cloud drifted from the summit, reminding him of the smoke rising from Assiniboine teepees ⛺️🔥

I think every mountain has its own story, its own character, and its own kind of magic.

Mount Assiniboine doesn’t need a nickname, but it deserves it’s own identity 💛 so maybe it’s time we stopped introducing extraordinary places by comparing them to somewhere els, what do you think? ☺️

Ever since I moved to Canada, I’ve been seeing these little guys around on my walks in and around Calgary. In spring and summer there’s usually at least one popping out of its burrow to see what’s going on. And if you’ve been around here during a while, you know I have a soft spot for tiny furry animals, so it’s not a surprise I love them 🥹

And of course I became curious: Why do they suddenly disappear in the middle of summer? Why are they always standing up like little meerkats? 👀
and why is no one of my Canadian friends able to confidently tell me their name?! 😂

So I did a little digging (they’d probably approve, hehe), and found some cool facts 🤓

Hope you like them only half as much as I do 💛

that moment when you’re lying in your tent, pulling open the zipper aaannnd… all you see is fog. 😂

even tho the fog stuck around all morning, it was actually pretty magical to watch. It kept rolling in and out, wrapping itself around the peaks, then slowly lifting again, revealing little glimpses of the mountains before hiding them once more ☺️

started this trip as strangers and came back as friends 😊

A couple of months ago, @nature.is.neato texted me asking if I ever go backpacking (bold!!). I was honestly a bit surprised because, at that point, we’d only met once and had barely talked, but her message was so sweet and genuine that I just had to say yes.

It’s definitely interesting to agree to spend more than 24 hours together, share an 8 hour round trip drive, and even a tent with someone you barely know 😅

But somehow, it all felt incredibly easy ☺️
We both admitted that we’d thought about bailing on the trip a couple of times, because of insecurities, overthinking, wondering if it’ll be awkward, stepping outside your comfort zone.

In the end, we were both just happy with mountains, beautiful views, a little bit of yapping, and plenty of quiet moments in admiring flowers and enjoying the peace in this beautiful national park 🙏🏻

It’s funny how often our minds try to convince us not to do something that ends up becoming one of the highlights of our summer ☀️
Soo I guess this is a little reminder for us: send the message, say yes to adventures, and don’t always listen when your comfort zone tells you to stay home ☺️

You never know which stranger might become a friend. 🥰

bed by 9 or out there for sunset? 👀

I know it always looks so effortless on this app when people share sunrise and sunset adventures. But the truth is, in summer, when sunset is at almost 10pm, I have this debate with myself almost every single time, because I hate driving in the dark. 😅

and then my brain brings up thoughts like: do I really want to drive all the way to the mountains? I’ll get home so late, it’s gonna be dark…, wouldn’t it be nicer to stay in my comfy bed?

But sometimes I go anyway, and every single time, I’m standing there watching the golden light in the mountains, my jaw somewhere on the ground, thinking “why did I spend so much energy trying to talk myself out of this?!” 😅

Can anyone else relate? 👀

something many travelers don’t expect on their trip to the Rockies. At first, this almost looks like a foggy day in Kananaskis, but it’s not fog, it’s wildfire smoke.

‘wildfire season’ isn’t a new term. People have used it for decades to describe the time of year when wildfires are most likely to start and spread. but as the summers here become warmer and longer, wildfire seasons have become longer and more intense too, and it has almost become something people expect every summer now.

you don’t even have to be anywhere near a wildfire to experience it, because smoke can travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres, turning blue skies grey and making entire mountain ranges disappear in thick smoky ‘fog’.

around half of Canada’s wildfires are started by lightning, but those fires account for about 80% of the total area burned because they often begin in remote places where they’re much harder to detect and fight.

⚠️ to prevent causing a fire yourself, please always follow fire bans or restrictions in the area you’re visiting 🫶🏼

If you’re visiting the Rockies in summer, it’s worth checking the air quality health index (AQHI) before heading out whenever the skies look hazy. On smoky days, consider choosing a shorter hike, taking more breaks, or simply waiting for conditions to improve 🙏🏻

I’ve been out hiking when the air quality was really poor, and I honestly wouldn’t recommend it. After just a few minutes, especially on uphill sections where you’re breathing more heavily, I could already feel my throat getting scratchy.

take care of yourself, because the mountains will still be there when the air is clear again. 💛

one of the coolest things about calgary is that you can have a super chill morning and then spontaneously decide to head to the mountains in the afternoon ☺️

that’s exactly what we did saturday & sunday last weekend, and it was the best decision!! 😍

the golden afternoon light, the wildflowers, the snacks, the company, and the views made it feel like we’d gone away for a mini holiday. We even walked from Alberta into BC on sunday, how cool is that?! 😅

anyway, consider this your reminder that you can always choose a little adventure, even if it’s late in the day. It doesn’t have to be the mountains—just get outside, soak up some fresh air, notice what’s around you and enjoy our beautiful world 💛

don’t be fooled by all the dreamy wildflower videos from the Rockies right now, because what you don’t see is the cloud of mosquitoes hovering above your head, waiting for their snack to finally give in 😅

My bug spray worked surprisingly well tho, so if you have to add one item to your backpack, make it bug spray. I swear it’s worth it. ☺️

some notes to myself that may not just be for me 🫶🏼

Sometimes I notice I need the exact opposite of what I’m doing. When I’m in a rush, I make mistakes, so I need to slow down. My energy is more stable when I take breaks before my battery is empty, and the best I had was when I had no service and didn’t fill everything with busyness 💡

I struggle with being okay with not knowing what my next step is, but knowing that I’m more present if I worry less, helps 💛

maybe that’s the secret to German efficiency: we’re very committed to work, but equally committed to Feierabend 😂

Sometimes I feel like there’s a word for everything in German. In most cases, it’s a very descriptive language. Because what do you do, when your work day is done? Right, you celebrate 🥳

This word actually has historical roots in the idea that, once the day’s work was done, the evening belonged to you. It was a time to rest, spend time with family, and enjoy life before the next workday began.

Especially on days when I’ve been sitting at a desk for hours, the first thing I want to do after work is move my body, get some fresh air, and spend time in nature.
While going for a sunset hike after work is pretty amazing, it doesn’t have to be a big adventure every time. But getting fresh air and moving my body isn’t secret to a balanced body & mind 🙏🏻

what’s your favourite way to spend your Feierabend (or whatever you call it where you’re from)? ☺️

hard to believe that every single one of these photos was taken within roughly a 20 km radius of Waterton town 💛

This national park definitely offers so many contrasts my brain was hardly capable to process on such a short visit. It is very obvious, that a wildfire damaged huge parts of the park in 2017, but if there’s one thing this landscape teaches you, it’s that nature is incredibly resilient.

You walk through forests of towering burnt trees while colourful wildflowers bloom beneath them (or even on them), which shows that destruction isn’t always the end of something. As terrible as wildfires are, especially when they’re out of control, they are creating space for new life to grow. Nobody knows why or how, but many of those burned and blackened trees are still standing today, despite the strong winds Waterton is known for.

The town itself is home to only around 30 year round human residents, while there’s a bunch of wildlife residents strolling through town every day. It’s not uncommon you sit on a patio while a deer strolls by. 😅

And one of my favourite facts: Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park in Montana together form the world’s first International Peace Park. Back in 1932, they created this park as a symbol of friendship between Canada and the US🤝
There are a couple of spots in the park where you can step, paddle or go by boat to the other side of the border.

I really love being here, and even though I’ve just left, I can’t wait to go back (next time, I’d love to explore the night sky more, because the milky way looked INSANE! 😍)

little reminder though: they’re wild animals, not pets. Give them space, don’t feed them, and admire them from a distance (even if they wanna sit down for dinner).

share the moment, not the snacks 💛

Last week, I met quite a few marmots on my hikes in Waterton, and won’t lie: it took every bit of self control not to cuddle these tiny potatos 🥹 but I couldn’t stop thinking about the way they kept approaching us (almost persistent) because: this isn’t normal behaviour for wild marmots❗️

Wild marmots are naturally cautious around people. They usually keep their distance and disappear into their burrows long before you get this close.

So when one confidently walks right up to people, there’s a good chance it’s learned that humans = food.

And that’s where the problem starts 🙃
Once wildlife starts associating people with food, they can lose the healthy caution that keeps them safe (it’s called habituation). They spend more time around roads, parking lots and busy trails, become more vulnerable to vehicles, dogs and predators, and may even start relying on people instead of searching for their natural food.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy these incredible wildlife moments, because I always see it as a little present what nature sends along my way 🎁 Just remember that a fearless animal isn’t always a happy or healthy one.

The best way to show wildlife love:
admire them from a distance
enjoy the moment
don’t share your snacks
leave them wild

Not my usual content, but I’m so tired of how normal it still is for some people to greet someone with: ‘you look so skinny!’, ‘have you lost weight?’, ‘have you gained weight?’or anything body related really.

Can we please stop? 🥲
I’ve learned (and I’m still learning) that a healthy body is worth so much more than fitting someone else’s idea of how we should look 🙏🏻💛

Our bodies carry us through life: they adapt, they change, they keep us warm, they allow us to explore, laugh, hug the people we love, climb mountains, dance, and experience this beautiful world. 🥹

And yet, we reduce them to their appearance far too often 💔

But the most important thing is: you never know what someone has been through.
A single comment might seem harmless to you, but it could stay with someone for days, weeks, or even years.

Instead of commenting on someone’s body, let’s start saying things like:
It’s so good to see you, your smile makes me happy, I’ve missed your presence, tell me about your latest adventure (there are so many options!)

Calgary stampede or mountains and peace? 👀

no hate towards Calgary Stampede 🤠💛 I actually love going every year, but I live right next door, which means: over 10 days of constant noise and cowboy madness 😅

So my favourite Stampede tradition has become:
leaving the city 🥾

This year I got the chance to escape to Waterton for a few days, and I couldn’t have picked a better time. While the city was buzzing, I traded crowds for endless wildflowers, crystal clear lakes and the most beautiful mountain views 😍

and please don’t get me wrong: stampede is great and if you get the chance, visit at least once. But for me, the best way to enjoy it is knowing I don’t have to be there every single day 🙃

By the way, although Waterton is one of Canada’s smaller national parks, it has an incredible variety of plants and animals because several ecosystems overlap here. It also forms the world’s first International peace park together with Glacier National Park (Montana, US), which was created in 1932 to symbolize friendship between Canada and the United States 🇺🇸 🇨🇦

June started with lots of mountain time, girl chats, and pika spotting before I flew to Germany for my sister’s wedding and some much needed time with friends and family 💛

My biggest highlight by far were all the hours I got to spend with my little nephew. He’s a tiny whirlwind with the biggest personality and the brightest little sunshine. 🥹

There were so many moments I’ll treasure. Like, my sister, who’s a mom now, got married?! Watching her marry the best man I could’ve imagined for her was pretty emotional for me. But also spending quality time with my parents (and their dog, who I love to bits), catching up with friends I’m incredibly grateful to still have, because long distance friendships aren’t something to take for granted and eating all the German food were definitely highlights in June.

Living between two worlds is strange sometimes. It means always missing someone and not being part of their every day life. But it’s also a gift to have people and places that make saying goodbye so hard ♥️

you’ll probably never look at rockfields the same way again 👀 Most people hike right past these rocky slopes without giving them a second thought.

But for pikas, these rock fields (called talus slopes) are everything: their home, their garden, kitchen, living room, bedroom and shelter high up in alpine rocky sections. 🏔️

Pikas are small, furry relatives of rabbits that live in mountain rock fields called talus slopes. If you’ve ever heard a sharp little “eep” while hiking, there’s a good chance a pika was nearby.

The gaps between the rocks provide shelter from predators, protection from harsh weather, and a cool place to escape the summer heat. They even use the surrounding meadows as their pantry, spending all summer collecting flowers, grasses, and leaves to create “hay stacks” for winter, because they don’t hibernate (but apparently they have a feast 😅).

There are around 30 species worldwide, spread across Canada, US, parts of Japan, Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan.

I am not great at this, but I’m trying to get better, because if I skip it after a long hike, my body sends me a strongly worded complaint the next day 😭😅

While stretching won’t magically prevent all soreness, it can help maintain flexibility, improve your range of motion, and reduce that stiff, rusty feeling after spending hours climbing up and down a mountain (for me? The soreness usually comes from
the descent 🥲). It also gives your heart rate a chance to come back down and your body a moment to recover before jumping back into the car for the drive home ☺️

The best time to stretch is right after a hike when your muscles are still warm. Just a few minutes for the calves, quads, hamstrings, hips, and lower back can make a big difference. ☺️

Peyto magic ✨☺️

When I saw photos of Peyto lake before I went for the first time, I always thought someone overdid the saturation in their editing big time. And then I stood there for the first time and was like, okayyyy how is this real?! 😅

it’s said to resemble the shape of a wolf’s head when you’re standing at the famous viewpoint, which is just a short walk from the parking lot, and it took me a while to see it, but now I can’t unsee it 😅🐺

The lake is named after Bill Peyto, an early guide and trapper who lived in the area. But tbh, the only thing that counts is soaking in that deeeeep turquoise, the surrounding mountains and all the beautiful trees around the lake ☺️
